While many nursing jobs are clinical and require an in-person presence, there are a surprising number of nursing jobs from home. Learn about the different types of jobs available and then browse a list of employers who often offer these positions.
Types of at-home nursing jobs include:
Medical Call Center
Working in a medical call center is
perhaps the at-home nursing job that takes the least experience. Nurses
who have worked in a clinical setting can usually transition to this
type of work. However, call center work pays the least.
Typically medical call center nurses perform telephone triage, give medical advice, or check on patients’ well-being and health habits. Insurance companies and medical BPOs (business
process outsourcers) hire nurses for these jobs, which are typically
employment positions, though some may be for independent contractors.
Training is usually done online from home as well, and most often these
jobs are for RNs and BSNs, not LPNs—though, some companies need LPNs in customer service positions.
Case Manager
If you work as a nurse in case management, you very well may be able
to turn your current job into a telecommuting position or find a new one
that allows telecommuting. Case managers coordinate care for patients,
often for large insurance companies, and it is very common for these
companies to allow at least part-time telecommuting. Unlike medical call
center agents who work from home, these home-based jobs—which might
include care coordinator, patient advocate, utilization review RN, and
Medicare and worker’s compensation specialist—are for those who already
have experience in case management.
Online Instructor/Course Developer
Online education is a growing field that is conducive to working at
home. Subject matter experts are needed in every field that is taught
online, and nursing is no exception. Tech-savvy nurses with teaching
experience may be able to use those skills in distance education, either
working as an instructor or in developing nursing courses.
These jobs are for online colleges and "brick-and-mortar" schools, as
well as private companies that develop courses and training materials.
Usually, a master's degree is the minimal requirement, but often a Ph.D.
is preferred.
Legal Nurse Consultant
These nurses provide lawyers, paralegals, and others working in the
legal profession with expertise about medical issues related to law,
such as personal injury, malpractice, worker’s comp, and more. Typically
this expertise is utilized in-house as opposed to testifying as a
medical expert. This type of work could range from managing and
interpreting medical records to coordinating medical exams for clients. A
legal nurse consultant may be an independent contractor or may be
employed by a law firm or insurance company. Either way, this job lends
itself to telecommuting, at least part of the time. Typically, a BSN or a
master’s degree and some legal coursework or experiences are required.
Health Care Recruiter
Nursing is just one professional background from which health care
recruiters come. Nurses in this field are often employees, and because
this type of work involves mostly phone and computer use, it can often
be done, at least part-time, from home.
Health IT/Nursing Informatics
IT jobs, in general, can often be work-at-home, but both the specific
field of health IT and general IT usually require time working in an
office environment and a high level of skill before transitioning to
work-at-home. Nurses may move into this work by learning on the job and
eventually make the move to telecommuting full or, more likely,
part-time.
